The BEST and WORST jetski model awards for 2024
Updated: Dec 23, 2024
Drum roll pleeeaaasee.....
YES this is our own opinion. Based on the evidence we see in front of us as an independent service and repair workshop. Our bias is the mechanical function and reliability, not the user experience.
1ST PLACE for favourite used model; Seadoo Fish Pro
SEADOO FISH PRO 155/170;
Reasonably free of mechanical issues to date when you take into account the high number of units sold (2019-2024). Not 100% risk free - a small percentage have issues, and a couple of major issues, but it seems to be within a reasonable tolerance that can be expected for any mechanical product.
Sought after by jetski fishing enthusiasts as the preferred fishing platform, making it the current best re-sale value over all other brands and models.
LAST PLACE for favourite used model; Seadoo Spark
SEADOO SPARK;
Poor design for access to the engine bay resulting in owners unable to air and maintain between services. This is a corrosion nightmare from the moment it enters salt water.
Early models had a mechanical issue which caused water ingress into the motor after deterioration of the PTO shaft, and often undetected, lead to major engine damage in the thousands of dollars.
The 2016/17 onwards had a removeable PTO shaft - but this still can eventuate into the same problem if not stripped and checked periodically (which makes it the most expensive model to service in history).
The hull is plastic and fragile. A reasonable force can cause a chunk to break off and the new replacement hull is $4000+
Some of the internal ENGINE parts are plastic. No more needs to be said about that.
They are made to a certain price point, but when compared to the Yamaha EX (budget equivalent) the Spark is significantly less value for money.
Photo: The significant corrosion on the engine block of a 1-year-old Spark due to the design means the owners have to remove the whole top deck of the hull to access the engine for post-ride care. Not an issue in other countries where riding is predominately in fresh water.
What about Yamaha? Well, yes the FXHO 1800 is a good option and would probably get 2nd place for the best used jetski choice. The base EX model would also be a far better option to consider than the Seadoo Spark if the dollar value was the attraction. The new Yamaha JetBlaster is no doubt aimed as the Spark alternative.
What about Kawasaki? After the disruption to the brands NZ agent network in 2024, potential Kawasaki buyers should consider who will be servicing their watercraft prior to purchasing one until Kawasaki rebuild their network in 2025/2026.
A list of our Top Favourite Used Models is included with our Buyers Guide - the best $20 ever spent if you are starting with no knowledge of the jetski market. Written specifically for the NZ market, which differs greatly to Australia and US markets.
